I KNEW my Wish Bear worked!! It’s like all my childhood dreams come true with the news that Netflix are to bring back Care Bears.
It should be pointed out that I loved, and still do love, Care Bears with all my heart. Grumpy Bear, Friendship Bear, Share Bear, Funshine Bear, the list goes on and I collected them all. The small plastic figurines were usually bestowed on me as rewards for doing immensely clever things, like passing my 25 metre swimming badge.
I still have both the figures and the soft plush toys, though the figures are usually stuffed in my son’s handbag under the guise of ‘having a disco in there.’
Oh, get me, all reminiscent. It was a happier time, was it not? Sigh.
Anyway, in 2016, good old dream maker Netflix is to give us Care Bears and Cousins, which makes it EVEN BETTER, because it paves the way for us to have characters such as Brave Heart the Lion, Cozy Heart the Penguin and Lotsa Heart the Elephant. Remember them? I do! I still have my Lotsa Heart Elephant, and I used to have a t-shirt with Brave Heart on. (Yes, I am proud.)
Care Bears have been the subject of many a relaunch over the years, the latest one coming in 2011. Naturally I was over the moon, and even if the bears were CGI and not the hand drawn animation I remember of old, I was just happy to have them back on our screen. I do miss Care-A-Lot castle though, which doesn’t feature in the 2011 version, and Tender Heart Bear is more of an old wise Uncle than a firm yet fair leader.
I would like to see a return to traditional animation this time, though that might be unlikely as my guess is they’re trying to appeal to children and not over excited nostalgic adults. No doubt there will be an introduction of new bears or cousins too. How about ‘iPad Bear’ or ‘Texting Heart the Tiger?’ ‘Netflix Bear’ and ‘Amazon Bear’, just to keep things fair?
The answer of course, is none of these. Just bring me my Care Bears in a good old fashioned animated TV form and I will be happy for the rest of my born days.
